For this project, the existing slope made the backyard difficult to use for entertaining. Rather than fighting the terrain, we embraced it by designing a multi-level hardscape. Terracing is an effective solution that transforms a steep incline into a series of flat, functional outdoor rooms, preventing soil erosion while adding depth and visual interest to the property.

To achieve the necessary structural integrity for the retaining walls, we utilized the E.P. Henry Coventry Wall III system. We chose this product for its rustic, quarried stone appearance, which blends seamlessly with the traditional architectural styles found throughout our area. Beyond aesthetics, the Coventry Wall system features a pin-based interlock that provides the mechanical strength needed to support the soil load and the weight of the upper patio levels. This ensures that the walls will not bow or shift over time, a critical factor when building on the sandy loam soils typical of the region.

Selecting Materials for Durability and Style

The kitchen component of this build required materials that could withstand both the heat of a grill and the freezing cycles of a New Jersey winter. For the countertops, we installed natural Thermal Bluestone. We recommend this stone specifically for outdoor culinary zones because the thermal finishing process creates a textured, non-slip surface that is safe even when wet. Furthermore, bluestone is highly durable and heat-resistant, meaning it will not crack or discolor if a hot pan is placed on it during a summer cookout.

Complementing the stone work is a custom gas firepit filled with tumbled glass. Unlike traditional wood-burning pits which can be smoky and messy, the gas system provides instant ambiance with the flip of a switch. We utilized tempered fire glass media because it is designed to withstand extreme temperatures without melting or popping. This glass also improves the efficiency of the fire feature by radiating heat outward more effectively than lava rock, keeping guests warm as the seasons change.
